Audition for Mac on the Studio1A Mac Pro.
It seems like yesterday. I was working in a cramped radio station production studio with sound effects libraries on vinyl, cart machines and reel-to-reel decks to the left and right of the mic boom. Creating and editing a good spot was easy if your razor blade was sharp and your splices were marked well. How far we have come.
Today, Adobe announced that Audition for Mac is available as a public beta download. Having worked with the beta for some time, I can tell you that it’s come a long way. For many years, Audition fans (including myself) have clamored for a Mac version. Today, Adobe makes multi-track History for droves of fans that needed more in a Mac based multi-track editor and recorder.
I’m most happy about what Adobe did not do. So many ports of great programs get lost in the translation. Not with Audition. If you’re a seasoned Windows Audition user, you should be editing and bouncing in no time at all. The interface was designed to be as close as possible to the Audition we know. New highlights include intelligent multi-core CPU support on a completely re-built playback engine, World-class audio restoration tools, thousands of royalty free loops, effects and beds and much more.
All of this is great, but nothing beats turning to my Mac Pro and being greeted by an old friend. The search is over.
At Studio1A, we’ll be following up with you and tracking Audition for Mac to its final release. Stay tuned!
Be sure to check out NewMediaGear page on Facebook! I’ll be posting there between shows.

The GXL3000 Studio Microphone from CAD Audio.
I first noticed the unassuming GXL3000 microphone as part of a BSW promotion. Intrigued by the low price; word on the ‘net was that this inexpensive (sub – 0USD) piece is a great performer.
After trying it out myself, I can say this one excels, even if you disregard the great price point. Why?
Before even plugging in, I liked the looks of this one. Squint your eyes a bit and stretch out the body. That little mesh crown at the top reminded me of a U47 on a diet. Looks aside, this model comes with a ‘pinch’ type shock mount …and a zipper leatherette pouch. You’ll find 3 pickup patterns included. Omni, figure-8 and cardioid. For everyday VO and speech/vocal work, I concentrated on cardioid. A glance at the microphones back reveals a 10db pad and a 100hz high pass filter.
How does it sound? Let’s fire up phantom and give it a try.
Well, the best answer is to listen in and hear the 3000 in Studio1A. In words, I would say it has excellent speech articulation. Nice and crisp. The bottom end is well cared for, allowing me to get by with barely a p-pop, even without a filter. I always listen for that articulation bump and how it is characterized. It gives a nice crispy, but subtle punch.
Let me know what you think? In the sub-0USD category, I think this is a lot of microphone for the money. That’s just my opinion though. Stop by and listen in!
Be sure to check out NewMediaGear page on Facebook! I’ll be posting there between shows.
