207 Podcast Answer Man – A to Z Success Story – Adobe Audition CS5.5 – Alesis iO Dock For Podcasting? And More!

Adobe Audtiion CS5.5
Adobe Audtion 4.0 is actually named Adobe Audition CS5.5. The new version is now available for both PC and Mac users and is available for pre-order now. The affiliate link (http://goo.gl/SRC9q) here on my site will automatically take you to the page where you can pre-order the new version. If you simply can’t wait for the new version, you can purchase version 3.0 for the PC or it does appear that you can still down the beta pre-release version of the CS5.5 at http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/audition. The full version is 9 and the upgrade price is . I don’t have any specifics at all, but I know that teachers and students are often eligible for special pricing. The new version is expected to ship by Mid May.

Alesis iO Dock
Alesis has announced the the iO Dock Pro Audio Doc for the iPad. The specs show that it will provide users with two combination XLR and 1/4-inch inputs, each with its own gain control and switchable phantom power for condenser microphones. Theoretically, podcasters could connect outputs from their mixer and record their shows with the iPad playing the role of the Digital Audio Recorder. Users can connect the iO Dock’s stereo pair of 1/4-inch main outputs to studio monitors or I would assume a PA system system if you were doing a live show. You can monitor on headphones, and independently control the levels of the two outputs, each on its own knob. The iO Dock’s direct-monitor switch enables you to toggle between the incoming and playback signal on their headphones.

Would I consider using this for my own shows? I’ll just say that I am HIGHLY SKEPTICAL at this point. I’m admittedly an Apple Snob. I love my Apple products. However, with that said, I’ve had enough spinning beach balls on my Mac computers to keep me from ever considering relying of software to record my shows on anything other than a dedicated device that is designed to do nothing more than record professional audio. The iOS system is actually more buggy than the Mac OS. App crashes on the iPhone or iPad are quite common place and I would imagine that those who would rely this device as their only method of recording the audio for this show will actually see a higher percentage of episodes completely lost than those who record into their computers.

Testimonial from Stacy Westfall
Folks, you’ve heard me do a lot of talking about my Podcasting A to Z Course (http://PodcastAnswerMan.com/atoz). In this episode, I play a testimonial from one of my students who went through the March course. There are many other success stories that have come out of our March that I’ll be sharing in the future. However, I did want to share Stacy’s testimonial that she called in for the show. I’ve transcribed the testimonial for those of you reading the show notes.

Hi Cliff, it’s Stacy from The Your Horse Career Podcast at http://YourHorseCareer.com. And I needed to call and give you some feedback on your a to z course (http://PodcastAnswerMan.com/atoz). I was in the first A to Z course and it was amazing.

I started to listening to podcasts about a year ago with Dave Ramsey and that led me into listening to Dan Miller, and then that led me to listening to you. My husband and I had wanted to do an internet talk radio hosted type thing on our website for years, before I even knew what podcasting was. We kept listening and looking for ways to get into it but we kept getting conflicting messages on what equipment to use, what software, how to host it, and so I never pulled the trigger.

When we heard that you were advertising your a to z course (http://PodcastAnswerMan.com/atoz), I saw my opportunity to complete a program, a full out program, that would take me from step one all the way through the finished product. I was not disappointed. You over delivered with your webinars and tutorials, your confernce calls, and everything you had was so much information.

My husband, Jesse, and I were actually able to launch a website and a podcast during the course. We now have four episodes up and we’ve had just shy of 2,500 downloads and it’s all possible because of your a to z course (http://PodcastAnswerMan.com/atoz).

I can’t thank you enough for offering the first one. And I’m really thankful that you are offering the almuni discount on the second one because I’m really excited about taking our podcast to the next level.

As of Thursday, April 28th, at 7am, there are 9 of the 20 spots still open due to my lack of time spent marketing this course. Please check out http://PodcastAnswerMan.com/atoz for the full details of the course and email me at Cliff@PodcastAnswerMan.com if you have any questions at all about the course!

PODCAST CONSULTING: I’m available for one on one podcast consulting and coaching. Whether you want someone to get everything set up for you or you just need a little help along the way, I’d love to work with you. I’m able to demonstrate using screen sharing technology during our call which makes it just like I was there sitting next to you at the computer. If you are interested, email me at Cliff@Ravenscraft.org or call me at 859-757-1399.

5 Audio Books for Mother’s Day

Has your Mom read all the best sellers? Looking for something new and different for Mother’s Day? If you want to give your Mom something different and enjoyable then check out these 5 audiobooks. They’re all great and she will love them.

The Happiness Project By Gretchen Rubin

Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun Gretchen Rubin had an epiphany one rainy afternoon in the unlikeliest of places: a city bus. “The days are long, but the years are short,” she realized. “Time is passing, and I’m not focusing enough on the things that really matter.” In that moment, she decided to dedicate a year to her happiness project. In this lively and compelling account of that year, Rubin carves out her place alongside the authors of best-selling memoirs such as Julie and Julia , The Year of Living Biblically , and Eat, Pray, Love . With humor and insight, she chronicles her adventures during the 12 months she spent test-driving the wisdom of the ages, current scientific research, and lessons from popular culture about how to be happier. Rubin didn’t have the option to uproot herself, nor did she really want to; instead she focused on improving her life as it was. Each month she tackled a new set of resolutions: give proofs of love, ask for help, find more fun, keep a gratitude notebook, forget about results. She immersed herself in principles set forth by all manner of experts, from Epicurus to Thoreau to Oprah to Martin Seligman to the Dalai Lama to see what worked for her – and what didn’t. Her conclusions are sometimes surprising – she finds that money can buy happiness, when spent wisely; that novelty and challenge are powerful sources of happiness; that “treating” yourself can make you feel worse; that venting bad feelings doesn’t relieve them; that the very smallest of changes can make the biggest difference – and they range from the practical to the profound.

Girl Who Fell from the Sky By Heidi Durrow

“A timely and moving bicultural coming-of-age tale, based on a true story and told by an author who has struggled with the same issues as her protagonist. The daughter of a Danish immigrant and a black G.I., Rachel survives a family tragedy only to face new challenges. Sent to live with her strict African-American grandmother in a racially divided Northwest city, she must suppress her grief and reinvent herself in a mostly black community. A beauty with light brown skin and blue eyes, she attracts much attention in her new home. The world wants to see her as either black or white, but that’s not how she sees herself. Meanwhile, a mystery unfolds, revealing the terrible truth about Rachel’s last morning on a Chicago rooftop. Interwoven with her voice are those of Jamie, a neighborhood boy who witnessed the events, and Laronne, a friend of Rachel’s mother. Inspired by a true story of a mother’s twisted love, The Girl Who Fell from the Sky reveals an unfathomable past and explores issues of identity at a time when many people are asking, “Must race confine us and define us?”

Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand By Helen Simonson

You are about to travel to Edgecombe St. Mary, a small village in the English countryside filled with rolling hills, thatched cottages, and a cast of characters both hilariously original and as familiar as the members of your own family. Among them is Major Ernest Pettigrew (retired), the unlikely hero of Helen Simonson’s wondrous debut. Wry, courtly, opinionated, and completely endearing, Major Pettigrew is one of the most indelible characters in contemporary fiction, and from the very first page of this remarkable novel he will steal your heart. The Major leads a quiet life valuing the proper things that Englishmen have lived by for generations: honor, duty, decorum, and a properly brewed cup of tea. But then his brother’s death sparks an unexpected friendship with Mrs. Jasmina Ali, the Pakistani shopkeeper from the village. Drawn together by their shared love of literature and the loss of their respective spouses, the Major and Mrs. Ali soon find their friendship blossoming into something more. But village society insists on embracing him as the quintessential local and her as the permanent foreigner. Can their relationship survive the risks one takes when pursuing happiness in the face of culture and tradition?

Breakfast with Socrates By Robert Rowland Smith
Breakfast with Socrates explains what history’s greatest thinkers would say about everything we do each day, from heading to work, through going to the gym, making dinner and falling back to sleep. We rarely think about how these everyday activities relate to wider ideas about the world, but Robert Rowland Smith illuminates the connections with wit, warmth and authority. In this hour-by-hour commentary on a single day in our lives, you’ll find Lucretius explaining why it’s good to be unprepared and Emerson advising you on booking a holiday. You’ll get insight from Jung about your dreams, thoughts from Mill on bunking off, and the lowdown on sex from Aristophanes.

Parisians: An Adventure History of Paris By Graham Robb

This is the Paris you never knew. From the Revolution to the present, Graham Robb has distilled a series of astonishing true narratives, all stranger than fiction. A young artillery lieutenant, strolling through the Palais-Royal, observes disapprovingly the courtesans plying their trade. A particular woman catches his eye; nature takes its course. Later that night, Napoleon Bonaparte writes a meticulous account of his first sexual encounter. An aristocratic woman, fleeing the Louvre, takes a wrong turn and loses her way in the nameless streets of the Left Bank. For want of a map – there were no reliable ones at the time – Marie-Antoinette will go to the guillotine. Baudelaire, Baron Haussmann, the real-life Mimi of La Boheme, Proust, Charles de Gaulle (who is suspected of having faked an assassination attempt on himself in Notre Dame) – these and many more make up Robb’s cast of characters. The result is a resonant, intimate history with the power of a great novel.

Neumann TLM67 Microphone

Sponsored by BSW. Voiceover, Broadcast Recording, Pro-Audio and New Media Gear is here…

Exclusively at InternetJock – Order Mark Jensen voiceovers!

The classic character of a U67 in a modern TLM design. An old friend returns to our VO studio – the Neumann TLM-67.

The ‘UNFLASH’ Link, just for our Apple Listeners!

It always happens just as a piece of gear leaves Studio1A. I realize just how much it will be missed. And so, the story goes with the Neumann TLM-67 microphone.

The sound, brought back to life from a simpler time, just feels right. A bit of that cozy-warm character …but not too much, exemplifies the TLM-67. An 80th Anniversary tribute to Georg Neumann, the 67 has a bold bronze colored silhouette of the man himself

The 67 is available as a standalone microphone or with the classic shock mount ‘Set’. If you don’t have a Neumann EA87 shock mount laying around, the TLM-67 Set is the way to go.

Body size is roughly U87, but coated in a darker color with the bronze looking badge. Being a TLM, this is a transformerless microphone, relying on a circuit card to match the output. On the back, you’ll find attenuation and low-cut filter switches. On the front, a single pattern switch allows for cardioid, omni and figure-eight pickups. For a sensitive, large diaphragm condenser, this one is just right for a project studio. The 67 isn’t overly sensitive and proximity effect is minimal. That’s what I like about this model. It’s not too transparent, bright or boomy; but just right.

Don’t take my word for it, have a listen to the new Neumann with a classic sound…
