244 Podcast Answer Man – Streaming On The iPad – Building Community From From The Hospital – Skype Audio Quality – And An Interview With Connie And Sheila

Building Community From From The Hospital
I started this episode off by sharing that I spent this past weekend in the hospital. I mentioned that if you wanted to know why I was in the hospital, you could read all about it in my blog post found at http://gspn.tv/hospital2012.

I made the decision to share this in Podcast Answer Man because I felt that the blog post linked above provides some great insight into how I’ve naturally connected with my audience over the years. If nothing else, you can pull up the post to see what LiveFyre looks like when there are over 200 comments.

I’m happy to announce that I feel healthier than I have ever felt before and I’m ready to achieve all the goals that I’ve set for myself here in 2012!

New Chat Leads To Streaming On The iPad
I recently received an email from Ning, the creators of the platform that I use for my gspn.tv online community and that I will be using for my new Podcast Mastermind Group.

In the email, they announced that they had completely rewritten their chat system so that it is now based upon Java and HTML5. Basically, this means that the chat functionality will now work on iOS and other mobile devices.

This news prompted me to move my Live Streaming Page over to my online community site. While doing some testing, I noticed that Ustream was prompting me to try out their new web based broadcaster. I decided to give it try and you can find out what happened by watching this video.

Skype Audio Quality
Tommy called in to ask if there were any differences in audio quality from Skype to Skype calls and Skype to regular telephone calls. In the episode, I provide the answer to this question.

Podcast Mastermind Group
I briefly mentioned that the Podcast Mastermind Group that I have been planning for the past few months is about to launch within the next ten days. There will be a special incentive for the first 50 people who become members of this exclusive group. If you would like become one of the first 50 members, please email me today at Cliff@PodcastAnswerMan.com.

Where Are They Now Interview
Connie Williams and Sheila Tidwell are the hosts of an amazing podcast called Connie And Sheila Talk. I absolutely love Connie and Sheila. They were my very first client who hired me for a full one day, on site, consulting job, something I hope to do a great deal more of in 2012 and beyond.

You can find their show at http://ConnieAndSheilaTalk.com. As mentioned in our conversation, the show has a Real Estate focus, and while I have zero interest in real estate investing, I’ve listened to over 50 of their 84 episodes that are currently online. I have found so much of the success principles that they have shared in their podcast to be transferable to my own business pursuits. I am consistently inspired by the stories they share, the books they talk about, and the guests that they have interview.

I consider Connie And Sheila Talk to be among one of my favorite Self Help/Business Management podcasts in the iTunes directory. Their show is a perfect example of taking a particular niche topic and bringing a fresh and relaxed approach to the content at hand. Their show is never overly technical, but has just the best balance of transparency, authenticity, and personal touch that makes you feel comfortable listening to their show.

I would say that by listening to only three consecutive episodes of their podcast, you could not help but come to know, like, and trust Connie and Sheila. They are simply fabulous! I hope that you find a great deal of value and inspiration from our recorded conversation and that it will help you apply a few things to take your own podcasting journey to the next level.

218 Podcast Answer Man – Very Initial Reaction To Mixlr – Pros And Cons of Removing This Show From Live Format – And More!

Removing Podcast Answer Man From Live Show Format Once Again
It seems that I keep going back and forth on this topic. The main benefit, to me, of having Podcast Answer Man on the live show format has been that the episode is scheduled and a live audience brings a level of accountability to actually get this show recorded at its scheduled time.

However, in this episode, I share that I have made the decision to pull this podcast off of my live show schedule once again. Rather than announcing my decision, I share my thought process on the pros and cons of removing this podcast from the live show schedule.

Pros

  • A more polished show each week
  • Ability to record in segments without pressure of live audience.
  • Better Show Notes For Each Episode. This should NOT be underestimated!
  • I don’t actively engage with the audio during PAM.
  • Less distractions during the recording of the show.

Cons

  • Many people enjoy listening to PAM live on Thursdays
  • Having the show scheduled kept me consistent with timely, weekly release.

I’m very happy with my ultimate decision and I will work hard to find a new scheduled time to record Podcast Answer Man and will simply need to focus on my efforts of self discipline to stick to that schedule.

My Very Initial Reaction to Mixlr.com
I returned from an 11 day trip with my family earlier this week. Just before I left, I heard about a new service called Mixlr.

Their site says that Mixlr makes it easy to broadcast high-quality live audio to the web, Facebook, social networks and mobile devices. Just download our free broadcasting app, and broadcast live instantly. Mixlr is perfect for bands, live acts, DJs, conference organisers, journalists, podcasters and many more besides.

I actually decided to give this service a try for my Live Show Thursday, trying to set it up just before I hit record for this episode. I was experiencing issues with very slow load times of starting up the broadcasting software on my Mac Mini and it seemed to cause me to lose connection with my Ustream Server each time it finally got started.

I then tried it on my 27” iMac and was able to get it to load. However, I was still experiencing an issue where the audio from the embedded widget on my page would not play the audio.

During the episode, I was initially critical of the audio quality of the service. However, by the end of my initial review, I found that you can, in fact, get CD quality audio from the service as a paid subscriber.

This seems to be a relatively new service. It’s one that certainly fills a need. I hope to investigate further. The folks at Mixlr did reach out to me after today’s live show to see if we can work out some of the issues that I’ve experienced. I will share an update on my thoughts on this service as I get a chance to investigate further.

Shout out to my friend Pat Flynn from SmartPassiveIncome.com
My good friend, Pat Flynn, had two amazing blog posts this week that I think listeners to the Podcast Answer Man audience would benefit from reading.

The first post is titled “The Dark Side of Successful Blogging.” I would add “& Podcasting” at the end of the title and tell you that it is 100% applicable to podcasters as well. Here’s a link to the original post: http://goo.gl/3enW3

Here are some of the points that are discussed:

  • A ton of email.
  • JV Offers.
  • Pressure to consistently produce top quality content.
  • Responsibility with what you recommend.
  • The Microscope Effect.
  • Copycats and content stealers.
  • Trolls.
  • Non-Believers.

I go through the list above and share some my own thoughts on each of these potential cons of finding great success with your blog/podcast. However, I also share how some of them can both be a drawback and a benefit at the same time.

As mentioned in the episode, Pat’s blog post about Amazon Affiliates is great as well. Here’s the link: http://goo.gl/3QWUN

New Podcast Spotlight
This week, I wanted to highlight the launch of a new audio podcast from Tony Rose from BloggingDiabetes.com. As promised, here is the link to Tony’s first episode: http://goo.gl/Q5y0w

Tube MP Studio V3 Mic Preamp from ART

For many years, the little ART microphone preamp, with it’s small but alluring analog VU meter has caught my attention. A tube preamp, analog VU meter and limiter for under 0. That is likely the combo that kept my interest going.

A few nice touches are both TS and XLR (in and out), variable input output and a 20db gain (rather than a 20db pad …these are positive thinking engineers) switch. The prerequisite 48VDC phantom power is present, and you can even switch balanced polarity if needed.

I really liked how the VU meter reacted to the limiter. Speaking of the limiter; it’s not bad at all. This little preamp won’t compete with big players, but it doesn’t have to. The current street price for the Tube MP is . Use it for voiceovers, as a DI box or just have some portable fun with your guitar.

Have a listen to the Studio V3 from ART!

enCORE 200 Microphone from Blue

The Blue enCORE 200 on-boom at Studio1A.

In Studio1A, we’ve been having a lot of fun lately with Blue microphones. The latest offering from Blue is the enCORE series, featuring 4 models. The most intriguing to me is the 200, which hits a nice balance between performance and price.

What sets the 200 apart from other stage microphones (Blue does list Broadcasting as an application as well)?

This is a dynamic mic that cleverly uses 48VDC phantom power. The 200 has a transformer as well as active electronics needed to boost amplification. This unique design allows for a very low impedance of 25 ohms. A feature of the enCORE 200 is that it tolerates long cable runs better in this configuration. I wasn’t able to test this, since our longest in-studio run is about 75 feet.

The 200 sounds a bit like a hybrid, having punchy mids and plenty of gain (almost condenser-like) while using the Blue aria dynamic element. I think the real beauty of this mic is it’s proximity effect; not allowing things to get boomy, but ultra-smooth.

Physically, the body of the mic extra tough, with a small LED that lets you know 48 volts has arrived. The laser engraved capsule area and large grille ring add to the unique look.

The enCORE 200 is supplied with a carry pouch and mounting clip. As we recorded this show, street prices were about 0USD. Have a listen to the Blue enCORE 200 and let me know what you think?
