226 Podcast Answer Man – Making Yourself Newsworthy

Making Yourself Newsworthy
In this episode of Podcast Answer Man, I am happy to share an interview that I did with Joel Bogges & Pei Kang from http://4PointsCoaching.com. The reason I brought them on the show was to talk about the idea of making yourself newsworthy so that you can leverage the local, traditional, media to spread the word about your brand. Joel has been covered on local television 30 times within the last ten months. He shares how he accomplished this in the episode.

Recording System Audio Without A Mixer
Wade called in to say that Wire Tap Studio is no longer working with Lion, the latest version of the Mac OS. He wanted to know if I knew of any alternative software that would allow him to use his recording software to capture system audio. I explained that I have only used SoundFlower as a tightly integrated big of functionality built into ScreenFlow. However, I suggested that he check out http://soundflower.en.softonic.com/mac to see if it something might work for him. Either way, I highly suggest going the hardware route, using even an inexpensive audio mixer and a digital audio recorder which would help avoid any issues like this moving forward. I have more information about this sort of setup in my Inside The Studio Equipment Tutorial.

SoundByte Audio Cart Software
I’ve often shared that I use SoundByte Audio Cart Software. Several people have asked me which version of the software that I recommend for purchase. My answer is the version. This is the version that I use and it is more than enough for my needs.

Playing Audio Clips From TV Shows
I had a call from Brian who wanted to know if I had any information on the legal issues involved with using audio clips from television shows. I gave the same answer that I always give when I’m asked about legal questions related to podcasting. That answer is to seek the advice of a lawyer for such information. With a huge warning to follow my example at your own risk, I share how in once case, I took an “It’s easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission approach.” However, I also followed this up by sharing that I’ve only taken this approach with one television show that we have done a fan podcast for.

183 Podcast Answer Man – The Fraunhofer MP3 Encoder – LAME MP3 Encoder – A Recommendation For In-Person Interview Recorder – Getting Rich Quick and Making Money While You Sleep!

Questions/Topics Covered In This Episode:

1 – If you don’t like the LAME encoder, then what alternatives are there?
I prefer to use Adobe Audition, personally. because it is a full editing suite with the fraunhofer mp3 encoder built into it. Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (FhG) is a German company that helped pioneer MP3 technology. The institute is a center of ongoing research of audio coding at low bitrates.

If you read this page from the Faunhofer website, you will see where it says… “If you are an end user and would like to use the Fraunhofer mp3 encoder or decoder, please use Apple iTunes or Windows Media which integrate the Fraunhofer mp3 software. Please note, that although mp3 was developed at Fraunhofer IIS, we do not sell any mp3 products to end users and do not provide end user support for mp3 devices and software.”

I personally recommend that if you are not using Adobe Audition, that you use iTunes to convert your recordings to .mp3, even if you are on the Windows platform.

2 – Is The iPhone 4 good enough for in person interviews?
I personally prefer using the Edirol R-09HR recorder for both line in recording in the studio and for my out in the field interviews. However, you can get some wonderful recordings using the iPhone 3G, 3GS, or 4. I personally recommend the paid version of the Griffin iTalk application.

3 – Why do you have your site set up so that it posts your podcast on Pages instead of Blog Posts? Is there a strategy behind that?
Actually, all my podcast episodes and blog posts are, indeed, entered as “posts” on my site and not as pages.

I know where this question is coming from. Sometimes, if you pull up the show notes to an episode, the url will look something like the following link:

http://podcastanswerman.com/178-pam-a-new-thesis-design-for-gspn-godaddy-sites-hacked-ios-compatible-chat-room-and-so-much-more

On many other occasions, you’ll see that the links to my podcast episodes are as short as the following examples:

http://podcastanswerman.com/audiovsvideoandplugins
http://podcastanswerman.com/heilpr40
http://podcastanswerman.com/bobheil

All of the short urls listed above are actually blog posts. In this episode, I’ll share my thoughts on PERMALINKS and my thoughts on why I choose to do them differently from time to time.

With that said, there are times when I’ve made the decision to create a PAGE to post podcast content. A perfect example of this would be http://gspn.tv/48-days.

4 – What your thoughts on Getting Rich Quick And Making Money While You Sleep?
Actually, this is my own question. I share my thoughts on this topic in this episode. I shared the following quote from Jason Fried’s book REWORK.

The Myth of the overnight sensation:
“You will not be a big hit right away. You will not get rich quick. You are not so special that everyone else will instantly pay attention. No one cares about you. At least not yet. Get used to it.

You know those overnight-success stories you’ve heard about? It’s not the whole story. Dig deeper and you’ll usually find people who have busted their (butts) for years to get into a position where things could take off. And on the rare occasion that instant success does come along, it usually doesn’t last — there’s no foundation to support it.

Trade the dream of overnight success for slow, measured growth. It’s hard, but you have to be patient. You have to grind it out, You have to do it for a long time before the right people notice.”

* I strongly encourage you to listen to the two podcast episodes that can be found at the two following links:

5 – Building Relationships And Always Giving More Than You Get In Return Pays Off:
Speaking of the “right people noticing…” I share two testimonials that mean the world for me. I explain why Joe Lamp’l of Growing A Greener World and Dan Miller of 48 Days To The Work You Love were major turning points in my business.

Rapid Video Blogging – Making Money With Web Video

Click here to get the free report(aff).

Of all the questions I get about podcasting, one question seems to be almost universal. That question is can you make money podcasting? That’s the question people want the know about.

At the last Blogworld conference, I learned that there are people making money. The key is having your own product and using your content to promote your product.

The reason I revisit this, is that I just read a great report by a guy named Gideon Shalwick. I’had never heard of Gideon before, but I saw his report referred to by a number of people I know. So, I signed up and got his report. It’s free, so why not.

What I found was really interesting. Gideon has taken the next step in the business model. Gideon shows how to turn your video podcast into a business.

He combines YouTube, a video blog, an email list and a product into a business model. He calls the process Rapid Video Blogging. And he shows you how to do it in his free report.

The report is 95 pages long and covers a lot of material.

The report shows you how to

  • Select a niche to build your product
  • Create high quality videos
  • Connect YouTube, your blog and email
  • And how to monetize the setup

And if you want more, he’s offering a coaching class to help you turn your podcast into a business.

I highly recommend getting the free report, even if you just want to be more successful in growing and engaging your audience. The report has lots of good ideas for every video podcaster, and I’m sure the same ideas apply to people doing audio too. Just bypass the hype and dig out what helps you.

Making Movies with the iPhone 4

A couple of students from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, Michael Koerbel and Anna Elizabeth James, have written and directed an entire movie – well a short film called “Apple of My Eye” using the iPhone as the camera and editing device. They did it all in 48 hours.

Considering what how they made this short film the video is excellent. At the end, they show you how they made the movie. That part is especially fun to watch.
