I was checking Podcasting News this morning and came across their post announcing Soundcloud will now provide rss feeds that can be used for your podcast.

So what is SoundCloud:

SoundCloud is an audio platform that enables anyone to upload, record, promote and share their originally-created sounds across the internet, in a simple, accessible and feature-rich way. From sample to symphony and soundbite to soliloquy, SoundCloud allows sound creators anywhere to instantly record audio on the site or via mobile applications and share them publicly or privately; to embed sound across websites, social networks and blogs and receive feedback from the community.

SoundCloud’s open platform also supports a wide range of applications built on the SoundCloud API, enabling everything from mobile voice recording, online mastering, digital distribution to Facebook artist profiles and iPad music making. SoundCloud offers free accounts to amateur creators, with more advanced users able to upgrade to premium accounts for advanced features like statistics, controlled distribution and custom branding.

And now they are going to support podcast RSS feeds:

Jeremiah Owyang of the Altimeter Group has a good post about the challenges facing the social technology industry.

Jeremiah does lots of good work exploring what’s going on the social tech industry and usually has lots of good content.  I really like this post however, because it sets the stage for some focused innovation on some of the issues that need to be addressed to make social tech more useful and productive.

A good list to provoke some innovation if you ask me.

Here’s his list of ten challenges he thinks the industry needs to address:

1. Noise overwhelms signal
2. Amateurism threatens expertise
3. Power shift to participants
4. Fast moving industry creates confusion
5. Risk of overhype
6. Lack of qualified talent
7. Measurement elusive
8. Disparate Data and Irregular Standards.
9. Culture shift creates an internal rift inside institutions.
10. Privacy Woes scare companies and consumers.

He does a good job of expanding on these topics in his matrix. I think this is a good list of issues for the industry, although I’m not so sure about #2. I don’t see amateurism threatening expertise as a challeng. I’ve seen lots of “experts” are anything but experts, and plenty of amateur who know what they’re talking about.

Intel’s social media marketing efforts failed miserably today. Intel was running a pretty bad ad campaign about earthquakes for some unknown reason. The earthquake in Haiti happens and Sky News has been running the ad repeatedly in front of a clip about the Haiti earthquake.

A bad disaster, a bad ad – you have to ask Intel what were you thinking?

Kari Aakre from Intel reached out to me to let me know Intel realized the issue and took action to remove the add. It’s good to see them respond responsibly and quickly. Apparently, Intel is working on technology to help deal with situations where two way communications have been interrupted/destroyed by situations like the Haiti earthquake. I hope they succeed.

Here’s Kari’s comment for reference:

The timing of Intel’s ad about its disaster communications technology research is unfortunate. While the media buy was made months ago, we are sensitive to the current situation and the people of Haiti, and pulled this ad as quickly as we could.

Separately, the Intel Foundation will match Intel employee donations to help support the people of Haiti during this difficult time.
